A pretty good interview with VIBE was released this week with Honey Cocaine. In particular the question was asked:
Do you have any key influences?
Yeah, Tupac. Tupac is my number one. He was one of the first artists I listened to as a kid. Even before I spoke English, I listened to Tupac. I didn’t even know what he was saying, but something about his voice, about the beats. I know he’s saying something. The same songs I listened to when I was three or four, I can listen to right now like it’s a new song. (VIBE,2012)
She hit the nail on the head on this one. We have heard for nearly 14 years now online that fans have come from all facets and all walks of life. Many fans who may either not speak english or english as a second language knew the name Tupac prior to actually speaking English. When we visited the Ivory Coast and parts of Kenya, this was a common theme. We’d hear Tupac music in the streets and we’d have a Bantu family speaker translate our discussions.
That is influence.
