There was a great discussion we had between students at Berkeley regarding the direction rap/hip-hop is going, and if it will ever be widely accepted as a form of poetry. Many felt it already has reached that, while others questioned if today’s rap has destroyed any chance for this expression to be considered by the masses, as poetry. The discussion then switched to Tupac and his message and what separated him from others in the same industry. Although there was a mix reaction (demographic consisted of over 20 students at a local event), the question on the direction and future of hip-hop has yet to be fully realized. Perhaps a new era will emerge from the ashes of the nostalgia that others have when reflecting back to the 90s.
